St. John Missionary Baptist Thumbnail Church History

Saint John Missionary Baptist Church was organized on July 28, 1890.  By the grace of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, it continues to be a pillar of the South End community, Little Rock, and the entire State.  Since 1890, eleven pastors have led this congregation, including our current pastor, C. Dennis Edwards I, who has served for thirty-seven years.

The church was founded upon the belief that the Holy Bible is the inspired, infallible, and inerrant word of God.  We believe the Bible to reveal the mind of the triune, all-righteous, and holy God; the fall of man into sin, and the salvation of the same by grace alone.

The church offers two Sunday morning worship services, 7:45 and 10:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m. Sunday School, Midweek Bible study (P.R.E.S.S. -- Power, Revitalization, Enrichment through Spiritual Studies), and more than fifty ministries designed to meet the needs of the church family and surrounding communities. Yearly we provide college scholarships for St. John youth; we regularly support Arkansas Baptist College and foreign missions in Ghana, Africa, and are affiliated with the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc.

The campus of the church includes a beautiful Sanctuary that seats 1500 hundred, the C. Dennis Edwards I Education Building, Helen J. Ellis Administration Building, a Conference Room that seats 99, Library, Fellowship Hall and Kitchen, Bookstore, Community Life Center, and a Clothes Closet and Food Pantry to provide assistance to many in the city.  We are in process of developing other church-owned properties into facilities that will greatly benefit our community.

St. John continues to grow in ministry, Bible study, membership, and excitement for the cause of our Lord.  Although we are predominantly African American in population, we are a genuinely loving congregation where all are welcome and made to feel a part of our church family.  We invite you to join us in our work to advance the kingdom of our Savior.
